Practice 19: Child Abuse and Neglect
Protect and respond to abuse of girls, boys and women.
A,B,Cs
- Talk to mother about neglect and abuse.
- Ask the woman what she knows about how to protect girls and women and if she has heard any stories from the village on child protection.
- Listen attentively. (Remember - this can be a sensitive issue for some women, therefore, be empathic).
- Appreciate if family is taking care of child protection issues.
- If not, try to understand the root of the problem. For example, poverty can be an issue or the husband hits his wife and children because he thinks he has the right.
- Brainstorm and come up with some possible solutions.
- Coach the mother on how to talk to her husband/family on neglect and abuse.
- Talk to her family, if required.
Key Messages
- Women and children need to be protected from physical, sexual and psychological abuse.
- Perpetrators of sexual violence are usually close relatives and neighbours. Young people and parents need to be aware and attain skills to prevent violence.
- All girls and boys should be enrolled tin school with no child left behind.
- Children should not be allowed to work.
- Child marriage and child labour should be avoided.
