Practice 19: Child Abuse and Neglect

Protect and respond to abuse of girls, boys and women.

A,B,Cs

Ask

  • Talk to mother about neglect and abuse.
  • Ask the woman what she knows about how to protect girls and women and if she has heard any stories from the village on child protection.
  • Listen attentively. (Remember - this can be a sensitive issue for some women, therefore, be empathic).

Brainstorm

  • Appreciate if family is taking care of child protection issues.
  • If not, try to understand the root of the problem. For example, poverty can be an issue or the husband hits his wife and children because he thinks he has the right.
  • Brainstorm and come up with some possible solutions.

Coach

  • Coach the mother on how to talk to her husband/family on neglect and abuse.
  • Talk to her family, if required.

Key Messages

  • Women and children need to be protected from physical, sexual and psychological abuse.
  • Perpetrators of sexual violence are usually close relatives and neighbours. Young people and parents need to be aware and attain skills to prevent violence.
  • All girls and boys should be enrolled tin school with no child left behind.
  • Children should not be allowed to work.
  • Child marriage and child labour should be avoided.
