Verbal Communication

Verbal Communication is communicating through a spoken language. It occurs when we are engaging with others via speaking.

  • It could be face-to-face, over the telephone, via Skype or Zoom.
  • While some verbal communications are formal (scheduled meetings etc.), some are informal (speaking to a friend/colleague over coffee etc.).
  • Good verbal communication goes beyond the words spoken, taking into account the pitch, tone of your voice, cadence etc.

How to effectively use verbal communication:

  • Use a strong, clear, confident speaking voice.
  • Avoid using filler words (example: urm, ah, like, you know, well, just etc)
  • Avoid industry jargon when appropriate.
  • Actively listen before you speak.
